General Information on Examinations
Examinations for all full-time courses, with a small number of exceptions, follow the procedures and regulations of the Institute which are based on those of Higher Education & Training Council (HETAC).
Students are also advised to familiarise themselves with the structure, content and requirements of their course all of which are available on the website courses.cit.ie
Please note that mobile phones or other electronic devices are not allowed in exam halls and if such devices are found switched on in the possession of a candidate, will be confiscated and reported as a breach of the exam code of conduct.

Individual Extenuating Circumstances Relating to Examinations and Assessment
Individual Extenuating Circumstances (IECs) describes conditions which temporarily prevent a student from taking an assessment(s) or significantly impair a student’s performance in an assessment(s). The CIT policy dealing with Individual Extenuating Circumstances Relating to Examinations and Assessment can be found here. A guide has been produced for students to help explain the processes and procedures for dealing with IECs. This guide is intended to detail the Institute’s provision and support for students who experience IECs.
It is important to outline the principles that govern the Institute’s approach to IECs:
- CIT is at its core a student centred institution and for this reason it seeks to provide every support possible to allow its students to achieve their true potential. This policy is intended to address circumstances which impact directly and negatively on a student’s assessment performance. This policy is not intended to provide compensation for all challenging and difficult circumstances a student may experience.
- Any provision or action in relation to IECs should have due regard for the Institute’s obligation to ensure fair and consistent treatment for all its students.
- It is essential that the integrity of the Institute’s academic standards is not undermined by any action or provision in relation to IECs.
What are Individual Extenuating Circumstances
The document, What are Individual Extenuating Circumstances gives detailed guidelines to allow students to understand what are considered to be valid IECs. In general IECs are judged by their impact on the student’s performance in specific assessment(s) and not the impact on the individual.
Getting Help with Individual Extenuating Circumstances
As a general principle all claims in relation to IECs should be initiated by the student. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that she/he understands and engages with the Institute’s IECs procedures.
In seeking help in relation to IECs students should familiarise themselves with the CIT students guide to IECs and the document entitled What are Individual Extenuating Circumstances.
If a student needs to make a formal IEC claim she/he should use this form.

Examination Appeals
The general Appeals Policy and appeal forms may be downloaded from this website - see below. Appeal forms are also available from the Admissions / Registration Office on the ground floor of the Administration Centre, CIT.
Appeals should be lodged with the Registrar’s Office within 5 working days of the day on which the examination results are published.
Appeals on the appropriate form must be signed by the student making the appeal and will be accepted directly from the student, by post, or by fax (to 021 4335016). A scanned electronic file of the signed form may be submitted as an email attachment. The student has a responsibility to verify the receipt of fax or email submissions by contacting the Registrar's Office. Appeals made on behalf of a student by a third party will not be accepted.
Grounds for Appeal
Results may be appealed on the following grounds (Details of what constitutes an appeal under each of these categories are available in the Examination Appeals Policy which may be downloaded here):
- Extenuating circumstances which were not known at the time of the assessment, or which were submitted sub rosa (Download extenuating circumstances appeal form).
- Procedural or administrative errors on the part of CIT in the conduct of assessment, or in the application of regulations governing assessment (Download procedural or administrative appeal form).
- Error in the evaluation of assessment material/performance (Download recheck/re-evaluation appeal form).
- Application form to view examination scripts
Details of each of these categories are in the Examination Appeals Policy which may be downloaded here.
Examination Appeals Fee
Completed Examinations Appeals forms should be accompanied by the appropriate fee as follows:
- For appeals on the grounds of Extenuating Circumstances or Procedural or Administrative Error the fee is €80.
- For appeals on the grounds of error in evaluation assessment material/performance the fee is €40 per module.
In the event of the appeal by the student being upheld, the fee charged shall be refunded in full.
General Notes on Examination Appeals
Early Disclosure of Extenuating Circumstances
Where an examination appeal is based on extenuating circumstances (e.g. illness), the appellant should note that, in general, extenuating circumstances must be submitted in a timely manner such that they can form part of the deliberations of the appropriate Module Examination Board meeting or Progression and Awards Board meeting. Accordingly, evidence relating to extenuating circumstances will not normally be admitted as grounds for appeal, except where it was not possible to submit this evidence for consideration at the relevant Board meeting. [See Section 4 of the Appeals Policy]. The Institute reserves the right to seek independent medical opinion.
Result of Appeal
An appeal may result in marks being increased or marks remaining unchanged. In the event of marks being changed, there may be a consequential change in the overall result.
Examination Supports for Students with Disabilities or Medical Conditions
If you have a disability or medical condition which means you need exam supports such as a reader, scribe, laptop, separate centre or extra time you should register first with:
- Laura O'Rourke, Disability Support Officer, in the Access Service, email: disability@cit.ie or telephone 021 433 5107 (direct) or 021 433 5138 (Access Service).
Laura will confirm with Ruth Murphy, Disability Administrator in the Exams Office, what supports you are entitled to in your exams. Ruth will then contact you nearer to exam time. You can contact Ruth by email: examsmgt@cit.ie
You need to do this well in advance of your examinations (at least four weeks before the start of the exams) so we can arrange the supports for your exams. If for some reason you cannot sit an exam and a scribe, reader or separate room has been arranged for you please let us know immediately.
If you have a last minute injury such as a broken hand or an illness that means you unexpectedly need examination supports you should email examsmgt@cit.ie immediately. Supports may be provided depending on your needs and the resources available.
English Language Assistance - using a dictionary
If English is not your first language and you are sitting exams in CIT you should read this document. This will tell you what help is available.
If you want to apply for permission to use a dictionary in your examinations you will need to complete and submit this form.
The Head of your Department needs to sign this and you must hand in a copy of the form into the Examinations office on the ground floor of the Administration building in plenty of time before the exam.
You must bring in your own dictionary to the exam and electronic dictionaries are not allowed. Extra time may only be allowed in the exam if you have a dictionary.
