Academic Success Coaching
Academic Success Coaching
This academic year the Student Engagement Initiative is piloting an academic success coaching project that aims to support new incoming first year students successfully transition into CIT, help them stay on track and support students who are disengaging and/or finding their academic study particularly challenging.
CITSSERI will work collaboratively with academic departments to help identify students early in Semester 1 and 2 who may need additional support to successfully complete their studies. Evidence suggests that the earlier the intervention the better the outcome for the student.
Success coaching will be offered to students within the department who are showing signs of disengaging from their studies. Certain ‘red flags’ are clear indicators of this i.e. not attending lectures/tutorials, not handing up assignments and/or finding study/programme particularly challenging.
CITSSERI will provide these students with 1-1 coaching and/or group interventions depending on the needs of the students.
Wk 1-2: Profiling of students in class groups facilitated by CITSSERI
The profiling will include a simple questionnaire developed by the Student Engagement Initiative in collaboration with the department and given to students in the classroom. The purpose of this questionnaire is to help identify possible ‘wavering’ students early in the semester. It will also give us an opportunity to develop a more informed understanding of the various student cohorts and some of the challenges they face.
At this meeting we will introduce ourselves, talk to students about transitioning to third level, explain that we will be working very closely with the department and that we are piloting a success coaching project for students within the department who wish to avail of it.
How to refer a student to Success Coaching:
If a lecturer/class coordinator identifies students with ‘red flags’ as highlighted above or have a particular concern about them, the lecturer can refer this student to CITSSERI for an initial assessment of need by Roisin O’Grady or Mary Mc Carthy, both higly skilled and experienced educational guidance specialists. The lecturer can fill out a referral form and email it to; firstname.lastname@example.org, to follow up with the student. Follow up may include a discussion with the staff member referring and the student(s) referred. An update will be given to the lecturer/first year class coordinator by a member of the CITSSERI team to close the loop.
Note: The lecturer/class coordinator can only refer students who are willing to avail of success coaching, therefore an open and supportive discussion is needed with student before referral. Students will always have the option to opt out even after initial assessment by success coaches.
