MTU Alumni E-News

Happy New Year and Happy First Birthday to MTU.

We achieved so much in 2021. Demand from CAO applicants surged, with first-preference honours degree applications for MTU courses rising by more than 16% in 2021, almost twice the national average. In addition, the KTI Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey 2020 indicated that total research expenditure in MTU exceeded €22M, the highest total achieved across Ireland’s Technological Universities and Institutes of Technology. Also, MTU was Ireland’s top-ranked Technological University in the Sunday Times Good University Guide for 2022, and was also University of the Year for COVID Impact.

I invite you to take a look back at some of the highlights of our first year. I hope you enjoy the highlights, which represent just a small sample of our great events and achievements in 2021. Let’s continue to succeed together in 2022.
As move forward into 2022, we are committed to working with our collaborators and stakeholders to deliver on our ambitions so that, in the future, there will be a great, global Munster Technological University for the South West of Ireland which we can all be proud of, regardless of whether we are at home or abroad.

Happy Birthday MTU.  Every best wish to our alumni for 2022.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Maggie Cusack, FRSE.
President

MTU is Ireland’s Top Ranked Technological University and Wins University of the Year for Covid Impact

The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022 has placed Munster Technological University (MTU) as both the highest ranked of Ireland’s Technological Universities and also the winner of a special award – University of the Year for COVID Impact.
In relation to winning the award for University of the Year for COVID Impact, President Cusack acknowledged the resilience, commitment and ingenuity of MTU students and staff who have found new ways to learn, teach, research and innovate during a period of immense challenge. “I am proud to lead a university community of students and staff who, despite all that they have had to deal with, continue to succeed together and to excel across all areas of our activity,” she said.

The Sunday Times adjudicating panel were hugely impressed with the MTU photo which won the SFI Research Image of the Year for 2020. “Talking Heads” is an image produced in 2020 by researchers at MTU, MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory and the MTU Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis, when investigating the effectiveness of mask materials in preventing the spread of aerosol droplets. It shows the spread of aerosol droplets from two talking medical dummies, one masked, the other not.

According to Alastair McCall, Editor of The Sunday Times Good University Guide, the public health messaging of this image is as relevant today as the pandemic continues as when it was first published in 2020 at a time when it was only just becoming apparent that Covid transmission was aerosol, rather than contact-driven. “They say a picture is worth one thousand words; this is a picture that could also save thousands of lives, and on its own earned MTU our University of the Year award for COVID Impact for its significance and societal reach,” he said.

MTU Lecturer Shares her Journey Rowing across the Atlantic

Dr Karen Weekes, MTU Sports Psychology Lecturer, reached the half-way mark in mid-January on her 3,000 mile journey rowing solo across the Atlantic to Barbados.

Karen is sharing her journey through video recordings in which she revealed the impact of using the para-anchor and talked about the noises, the tensions on the ropes and the whiplash of the waves against the boat while remaining in the cabin of her boat, Millie, for three nights.

Karen also revealed the moments where she was accompanied by a school of hammerhead sharks, an albino cat fish and a pod of dolphins who played at the bottom of the boat.

Reaching the half-way point is a huge psychological milestone for Karen. Rowing single-handedly means there is no break but the prize in reaching half way point is that she will now be in the area of the Trade Winds, and, combined with ocean currents, these should be giving Millie a little boost (fingers-crossed).

You can watch the video update in which Karen shared some of the challenges encountered to date, both mental and physical, on her journey rowing across the Atlantic.   You can also visit the She Can Do website for further updates on Karen's journey, which includes a live tracker of her location.

Supporting the Development of MTU

As we reflect on our journey to becoming the South West Region’s Technological University, we are grateful for the overwhelming support that we have received from our students, colleagues and external stakeholders from community and industry. As we move forward, our goal is to lead positive change in the South West Region through our approach to education, which has always been research-based and inclusive.

MTU’s ability to thrive as a progressive and inclusive university could not be achieved without support from alumni such as Brendan O’Regan, who contributed €100k recently to support 25 student entrepreneurship scholarships. Support of this nature is vitally important for MTU as it provides us with additional scope to help our students achieve their full potential within the classroom and in relation to their development as entrepreneurs and leaders in society and industry.

Philanthropic support of any level provides MTU with the opportunity to provide an enhanced range of opportunities across the region and to provide educational opportunities to an ever-increasing number of learners. An investment in MTU is an investment in a university on the rise that is creating the next generation of thought leaders, researchers and entrepreneurs.

If you wish to make a financial contribution or learn more about how you can support MTU, please feel free to make contact in confidence at any time with Elise Hennebry, our Fundraising Executive, by email or by telephone at 087 183 8512. Let’s continue to succeed together!
