Department of Fine Art & Applied Art

Based in the centre of Cork city, the Department of Fine Art & Applied Art is an exciting and dynamic environment in which to study. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, print, photography, sound, glass, ceramics and textiles, in order to develop their individual artistic practice. The emphasis is on open and experimental exploration, grounded in historical context and current critical debate around contemporary art & design.

The lecturing staff comprises practicing artists who exhibit locally, nationally and internationally. Teaching is delivered through a programme of lectures, seminars and workshops, alongside individual tutorials, group critiques and independent study. There is a great deal of external engagement, through a high profile visiting lecture series, international study trips and collaborative projects with local and national art institutions.  The course aims to equip each student with the skills, experience and confidence to develop a career in the arts.

FACILITIES

Students are given individual studio space and access to the full range of technical and workshop facilities, which include Print, Metal, Textiles, Multimedia, Ceramics, Glass, Photography and a specialist Visual Arts Library.  Access to facilities within other departments in CIT, e.g. music, engineering, and science, may be negotiated.
