Leaving Certificate Grade D3 at Ordinary or Higher Level in 5 subjects including Mathematics and either English or Irish.

Work Placement

At present, the following are the work placement arrangements. Between first and second year there is an organised work placement (minimum of 12 weeks) in a quality hospitality establishment in Ireland and increasingly with the option of an international placement.

Course summary

In preparing the student for a career in the hospitality industry this course emphasises a creative, inventive, organised and entrepreneurial approach. The Bachelor of Business in Hospitality Management is taught in a variety of ways with a strong focus on student centred learning.

CIT can boast of the finest tourism and hospitality education facilities in the country. The building contains two production kitchens, five specialist kitchens, two restaurants, a training bar, general classrooms and lecture theatres, as well as Front Office Reception room and Information Technology laboratories and is accompanied by all the necessary administration and support facilities.

The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing sectors worldwide in terms of employment and enterprise creation, driven in part by increased leisure time, huge growth in international travel and modern lifestyles that are creating a demand for convenience and high quality services. These trends are likely to continue and it is worth noting that the hospitality industry in Ireland is one of the country’s largest in terms of employment and growth.

Work Placement

Between first and second year, there is an organised work placement (minimum of 12 weeks) in a quality hospitality establishment in Ireland and increasingly with the option of an international placement. The placement will be matched to the student’s area of interest and skill level. The work placement is a formal component of the programme and is awarded academic marks and credits.

About Hospitality Management

Providing professional hospitality involves both the social skills of a warm welcoming customer-friendly manner and the technical skills of food preparation, guest accommodation & reception, wine and beverage service together with a deep understanding of management and business organisation.

The course emphasises a creative, inventive, organised and entrepreneurial approach to a career in the hospitality industry. There is a strong focus on student centred learning and teaching methods include formal lectures, tutorials, and practical operations classes which equip the student with the core skills necessary for a career in the Hospitality sector. Many classes combine both individual and team project work and they are supported by a range of visiting speakers, industry visits, and field trips.

 

 

Students who successfully complete Year 2 of this programme and do not wish to progress to Year 3 will receive the Higher Certificate in Business in Hospitality Management.

The Bachelor Degree course is designed to equip students with the skills necessary for a career in management in the hotel, catering and hospitality industry. Employment prospects are wide and varied. Some graduates will specialise in areas of the hospitality business such as food & beverage management, conference & banqueting management or rooms division management. Others may become involved in a technical aspect of the industry such as sales & marketing, human resources management, training or financial control. Others will aspire to senior general management positions or become involved in entrepreneurial activities and starting their own businesses.
