Department(s)

Tourism & Hospitality Studies

The Bachelor of Business in Bar Management is taught in a variety of ways with a strong focus on student centred learning. Teaching methods include formal lectures, tutorials and both individual and team project work. The course develops students’ knowledge of the concepts and the processes that are essential to sound managerial practice. There is strong emphasis on acquiring practical experience in the technical areas underpinned by theoretical knowledge. Students undertake work experience in carefully selected bar, hospitality and business operations in Ireland and increasingly, there is the option of an international placement.

The Bar industry, better known as the ‘licensed trade’, is a major industry in Ireland and employs in excess of 78,000 people. In recent years most bars in Ireland have widened the range of services offered to include food and entertainment. The range of establishments includes Hotel Bars, Restaurant Bars, Off-Licences, Theme Bars, Cocktail Bars, Wine Bars, Microbreweries, Nightclubs and Café Bars/Pubs. There are strict regulations with regard to who may be served, hours of opening, the provision of entertainment and so on, all designed to provide a welcoming, clean, safe and enjoyable environment.

Changing demographic, economic and social patterns are creating a society that is wealthier, better educated, travelling more and is increasingly more discerning with regard to the level and quality of entertainment and food and drink demanded. Dramatic changes have taken place in the licensed trade and related hospitality industries as they strive to meet the new demands placed upon them. These are most noticeable in the areas of business practice (marketing, finance, international work force, legislation) technology (new drink products and systems) and safety (public, health, and hygiene). These changes are well reflected in the course programme that provides the student with a challenging interesting and integrated course of study.

Professional Bar Management is part of the worldwide growth in the tourism and hospitality industry and offers extensive opportunities for employment and enterprise creation. Graduates can work in Ireland or abroad. This bachelor degree offers students the opportunity to acquire appropriate managerial skills and techniques that will enable them to be effective and efficient in bar management and the related food and entertainment industries.

Work Placement

At the end of Year 1, there is an organised and monitored work placement in a quality licensed hospitality establishment in Ireland. The placement is from mid- May to the end of August, where the learner has the opportunity to apply the knowledge, insight and skills gained to the practices of the work place under the guidance of an experienced industry professional.
