Full-Time (3 Semesters, September to August) Part-Time: Delivered on a part-time basis over a two year cycle (2016/17 & 2017/18), typically 5 semesters to complete.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants should hold a minimum of a Second Class Honours Grade 2 in a professionally accredited Level 8 Honours Degree Programme in Civil or Structural Engineering. Equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis to candidates who have not achieved this academic standard but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience in the discipline of Structural Engineering.

Course summary

The MEng in Structural Engineering covers both the theoretical background and the practical design considerations of Structural Engineering. The content seeks to reflect current and future practice in structural analysis, design, appraisal, experimental techniques, and information technology. It aims to provide the graduate with the advanced conceptual understanding, detailed factual knowledge, and specialist technical skills that are required for success in Structural Engineering. The elective options afford the opportunity for the development of skills and competences in a range of additional and associated disciplines. Following a period of appropriate professional experience, graduates will have the skills and competencies appropriate to achieving full membership of The Institution of Structural Engineers.

Structural Engineering is the science and art of designing civil engineering facilities so that they can safely resist the forces to which they may be subjected. All structures from bridges to buildings, harbours to airports, must be able to meet these requirements. Structural Engineers aim to design these structures with safety, economy and elegance.

About the Course

The programme of study is designed to progress your qualifications in the following ways:

  • Deepen your technical knowledge, skills and competences in the specialised field of Structural Engineering;
  • Prepare you to undertake the Institution of Structural Engineers Professional Practice Examination by developing your structural analysis and design skills to an appropriate level;
  • Develop your ability to carry out in depth research in a chosen field of Engineering, to draw conclusions from the research and present research findings;
  • Broaden your knowledge in other areas such as Sustainability and Project Management;

Aim

The Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering programme aims to develop advanced analytical, design and research skills in Structural Engineering. Graduates of this programme will be well equipped to meet the challenges of the modern Structural Engineering industry, providing and protecting the physical infrastructure that underpins society; in this context a broad range of infrastructure is addressed.

The programme provides an excellent platform for those intending to undertake the Institution of Structural Engineers Professional Practice Examination and it also allows the student to attain the educational standard required for Chartered Engineer status through an Engineers Ireland accredited programme.

Students who successfully complete 60 credits of the taught modules listed in Stage 1/Semester 1 & Stage 1/Semester 2 and who do not wish to take the 30 credit Research Realisation module in Stage 2/Semester 1 will be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Structural Engineering.

Part-time:
1 evening per week and a Friday afternoon
Students who are available to attend part-time by day may take modules on a phased basis and achieve the programme qualification over a number of academic years, typically 2 years.

Union of Students in Ireland (USI) Levy
The USI membership levy of €7.00 has been introduced as a result of a referendum where students opted to affiliate to the national Students’ Union. This levy must be paid before the start of Semester 1.

Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering (Level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications).

Further Studies

Suitably qualified graduates in Structural Engineering may proceed to a research programme leading to a PhD Degree.

Graduate Profile

Michael Minihane
Structural Engineer

Michael graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Structural Engineering in 2010. He was part of the first class to complete the MEng in Structural Engineering at CIT, from which he graduated with a first class honours in 2011. He is now working as a structural design engineer with RPS Group in Cork, where his role has a particular emphasis on the design, inspection, assessment and rehabilitation of bridges and other large civil engineering structures.

Michael achieved his CEng status in 2015.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

All modules are worth 5 credits unless otherwise noted.

The programme involves a variety of modes, including classroom based lectures, individual and group project work, tutorials, seminars, and presentations by visiting experts. A Research Dissertation is completed by each student.

From September 2016 the delivery of the programme will be scheduled to facilitate its completion by part-time students over a two year (four semester) period in 2016/17 & 2017/18. Per week, taught module lecture delivery will be from 6pm on one evening (Thursday) and on one afternoon (Friday).

Graduates of the programme will have skills, competences and a higher qualification to enhance their employment credentials in the national and international market. This new programme will significantly enhanced employment opportunities for graduates with the trend in recent years in the industry being towards recruitment of specialist Masters level graduates.

The graduates of 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 are employed with private sector firms such as consulting engineers RPS Group, Arup, MottMacDonald, Cronin & Sutton, Roughan & O’Donovan, Jacon Engineering, ACOM (New Zealand), Hurst & Malcolm (London). A limited number have chosen employment with contracting companies or are operating as sole traders.
