NEWS UPDATE

CIT and Pfizer’s entry has won the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Global Award 2015 in the category of Education and Training.  The entry, titled “Building Process Safety Knowledge and Performance”, is based on the 5 ECTS Level 8 module on Chemical Process Safety (CHEP8023) developed in partnership by Pfizer and CIT, and successfully delivered to 74 participants to-date with a sixth cohort in progress.

The programme has been extended from the original Little Island site to the Ringaskiddy site and has been previously recognised, through receiving a national Responsible Care ™ Award, as a model of good practice for other companies. The quality has now been recognised internationally.  Following on the recent accreditation by IChemE of CIT’s B.Eng (Hons) in Chemical & Biopharmaceutical Engineering at Master level, this Global Award is further proof of the calibre of education provided by CIT in engineering and the value of academic-industry engagement that is a key part of CIT’s mission.

Speaking last night at the Awards ceremony, CIT’s Pat Kennedy paid tribute to his chemical engineering colleagues and to the Pfizer colleagues who have made this such a success: Shane Horgan (CIT chem eng graduate), Michael Lynch in Little island, Nuala Kerley in Ringaskiddy, Seamus Fives (Site Leader for Little Island and Ringaskiddy), and Pfizer global corporate personnel: Declan Kielty and John Venitz.

The programme is tailored to the Pharmaceutical industry, providing a strong theoretical background and complementing the site’s own Process Safety controls and procedures.  The over-riding aspect of the module is to empower staff to challenge, to be critical, to seek better operation and safer practices, continually.  It provides a high-level view of the fundamentals, an orientation to the needs of the sector and a sharp focus on local operations.
