On Thursday, 11th December 2014, CIT Medical Engineering and Design Innovation Centre (MEDIC) took honours at the 2014 Irish Medical Technology Industry Excellence Awards in the Medtech Academic section.

The 2014 Irish Medical Technology Industry Awards were presented following the 8th Annual Medtech CEO Forum and were jointly hosted by the Irish Medical Devices Association, IMDA, the Ibec sector group that represents the medtech industry, Enterprise Ireland and the IDA Ireland. MEDIC scooped first prize in the academic innovation category ahead of other finalists Trinity and GMIT.

MEDIC was established in 2008 and it is Ireland’s only academic research centre certified to ISO 13485, the international standard for medical device design. The MEDIC team is skilled and experienced in medical device design, prototyping, verification and validation and an extensive network of clinicians supports their work. MEDIC recently developed the Tympanostomy Tube Device (grommet), a safer, cheaper, and more convenient single-use device, which places a pre-loaded grommet in to a patient’s eardrum in less than one second. This device was conceived by the MEDIC team and then designed, prototyped, patented and tested by MEDIC. It is now manufactured in Ireland, supported by Enterprise Ireland and brought to market by AventaMed, a CIT spin-out company.

Daithí Fallon, Head of MEDIC, accepted the award on behalf of the entire MEDIC team and said, “we are absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award and for our work to be recognised in this way. MEDIC has been on the innovation and commercialisation trail since well before it became part of the common language of the third-level sector. We have brought industry standard discipline in to the research lab by building a team of highly experienced engineers and innovators and I want to thank all of my MEDIC colleagues as well as CIT and EI for their support. We also thank the IMDA, Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland for the opportunity to showcase what we believe is a unique offering from the academic sector.”
