Blackboard

Description

Blackboard is a Learning Management System (LMS), otherwise known as a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). As a software application it allows for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content. Blackboard offers the following features; Webspace for course materials, Tests and Quizzes, Digital assignment submissions for students, Grade management, Group collaboration within courses, Online Discussions, Chat and Messaging Services. The Blackboard system also includes access control, administration of users and groups, enabling the establishment of an online learning environment.

What makes a LMS attractive is that it provides a ready-made framework and set of tools to facilitate modular course development and management, e.g., a place to host assignments and discussions, a means to access useful Web resources and reading materials, a calendar, a grade book, an internal email system, as well as testing and quizzing features. Essentially a LMS can assist educators in organizing their content in a way that has a consistent look and feel and that is relatively easy to navigate.

In Blackboard the designer and instructor roles are separate. Some tools are only available to the Designer such as Create Quiz and Create Assignment. Some tools are only available for the Instructor (under the Teach tab) to manage modules on an ongoing basis and interact with Students. Depending on what you want to do, you may need to switch between roles by clicking the Build and Teach tab. By default, lecturers will be enrolled with both roles so they will have access to all tools.

In terms of resources only basic IT knowledge, use of a web browser and simple file handling skills are required to use Blackboard effectively.

Staff in CIT have used Learning Management Systems for close on 15 years. Currently the Institute is in the process of transitioning from WebCT CE8 to Blackboard 9.
Staff are supported by the Teaching & Learning Unit in the form of regular training courses that are frequently offered in various aspects of Blackbord. The eLearning website http://elearning.cit.ie also hosts an array of resources ranging from help guides to online screencasts.
