Santa on a Comet ... Total Elipses ... Donkeys ... Snow & Elves ...

Santa and his helpers are riding a comet to Blackrock Castle Observatory for a very traditional ‘green’ Christmas holiday celebration!

Santa will be at CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory from 18th – 23rd December daily from 11am - 6pm for a Cosmic Christmas. Visitors waiting to meet Father Christmas can beam a message to the North Pole via the radio telescope, see seasonal movies and discover the magic of a traditional Christmas experience that is out of this world! The visit includes an astro/eco fun gift bag and entry to our award winning interactive astronomy exhibit, Cosmos at the Castle. Enjoy mulled wine & seasonal fare at Castle Restaurant. The Mallow Donkey Sanctuary will bring their donkeys on Saturday 18th to describe a modern nativity tale.

Full Moon Winter Solstice StarParty
Annual BCO Members Christmas stargazing party followed by Movies by Moonlight, a family friendly screening of Wall-E. On 2010 Winter Solstice falls not only on a full Moon but is also the day of the total lunar eclipse. Watch out that morning as just before the Solstice sunrise on the 21st December, the setting Moon will begin to glow red just over the horizon!

Saturday 18 December – Thursday 23 December

Cosmic Christmas >11am - 6pm daily
Visit Santa and his helpers on the icy Christmas Comet that brought them to Blackrock Castle Observatory this December. Celebrate a very traditional 'green' holiday and meet Father Christmas and send a message to the North Pole. The visit includes an astro gift bag that will help to emphasise the holiday message of caring for the environment. Take part in our award winning interactive astronomy exhibit, Cosmos at the Castle. Last but certainly not least - Enjoy mulled wine and herbal teas by the Castle's fireplace and admire our fabulous Irish grown Christmas tree.

Christmas Snow Workshops > 2pm - 3.30pm daily
Daily seasonal science workshops on how to make Crystal Snow Flakes and Snow globes.
These are a sure way to help fill the days before school begins again.
