Art Therapy > 3rd to 7th July
Introduction

Art Therapy can be defined as a form of psychotherapy that utilises a creative medium to allow an additional and alternate way for individuals to explore and understand their life experiences in a safe and therapeutic environment. Art therapy has been established in Europe and America as a profession since the 1960’s and is practised with a variety of client groups e.g. psychiatry, learning disabilities. Its history can be linked to the development of the arts in society including Outsider Art, Art Education and to the developments of Psycho-analysis/Psychotherapy in the 20th century.

For the past twenty years the Cork Summer School in Art Therapy has welcomed up to sixty participants annually, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn about and experience the Art Therapy process. Participants are offered the chance to explore the therapeutic potential of art through experiential workshops. A series of related lectures during the week allows participants the opportunity to process their content in a structured way.

For some this Summer School may be the first steps on the road to a career in Art Therapy. For others it may be an opportunity to re-engage with their creative identity. Every year this course has proved to be an invaluable personal encounter, whatever one’s motivation for attending. The intensive workshop and lecture series will provide a stimulating, challenging and ultimately rewarding experience for everyone.
