The IRON-Research Project , a collaboration between CIT Crawford College of Art and Design (CCAD)  and the National Sculpture Factory with the support of the Coleg Sirgar, Carmarthen, UK.

This unique week long IRON-Research Project has been initiated by CCAD Lecturer and artist James L Hayes and funded by the CIT Research Fund and CCAD.This project presents a rare opportunity for visual artists to make new artworks through a unique, if nearly obsolete, cast-iron process.

On Monday, 26th March, over 30 artists from Ireland and Wales will gather and begin a week long intensive workshop in the National Sculpture Factory where moulds will be made and cast iron will be recycled and transformed through an age old process into new art works.

Preparations have been ongoing for months, over a ton of cast iron has been collected, a furnace has been built from scratch with the support of experts, materials have been assembled, safety goggles have been amassed, work spaces have been cleared, and journeys have been plotted.

The workshop will be led by practicing artists and lecturers James L Hayes from CIT CCAD;Matt Toole from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgia USA; and Andy Griffith, Head of Sculpture, Coleg Sirgar, Carmarthen, Wales, UK.

We are excited in anticipation of the energy this unique event will bring to Cork.

This Research Project will be innovative, exciting and dynamic and may result in new synergies and partnerships between institutions, individuals and places. The process explored will also further add to Cork’s cultural capacity and increase our infrastructure to expand our services to artists.
