TEDxCIT September 6th 2012

TEDxCIT, an independently organised TED event, will take place on the 6th of September, 2012 at the CIT Cork School of Music (directions to the CIT CSM). Organised along the theme of “Creating our Future Together”,  the conference will feature 9 of the region’s leading philanthropists, academics and designers representing such diverse fields as technology, entertainment, design and education, among others.

Speakers at the event include Millstreet teenager, Joanne O’Riordan, whose tenacious and wholly engaging campaigning for disability rights and innovative technological support has been inspiring.  In the philanthropic field, Bill Liao and Cork man James Whelton will talk about their Coder Dojo initiative, which is aimed at fostering coding talent in Irish school childern and creating an environment where youths can learn coding skills from one another.

Cork Institute of Technology is well represented among the speakers by academics and alumni. Yet, the event is as much about the attendees as it is the speakers, says CIT’s Gerard O’Donovan, Head of School of Business; “TEDxCIT will attract some of the brightest people from our region. We hope those attending will take the ideas presented and use them as a catalyst for change in their lives.” While the event is invite only, the public can view a live webcast of the event on www.cit.ie

In the spirit of "ideas worth spreading," TED has created a programme called TEDx. TEDx is a programme of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxCIT where x = independently organised TED event. At TEDxCIT, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx programme, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organised.

All press requests should be sent to Colette Murphy [colette.mmurphy@cit.ie] or Jean Kearney [jean.kearney@cit.ie]

Please note that TEDx event organisers are not able to speak for the TED Conference. Any inquiry regarding TED should be sent to: Melody Serafino, TEDx Media Liaison (TEDxPR@groupsjr.com)
