Students visit Biomarin

Biopharmaceutical upstream processing students accompanied by Sandra Lenihan (lecturer), visited BioMarin located in Shanbally, recently. BioMarin manufactures treatments for rare diseases. The Manufacturing Manager greeted the group and delivered an excellent overview on BioMarin’s range of products and the background to the site (formerly Pfizers Biotech Shanbally). Subsequently, a very informative walk around the facility covering both upstream and downstream biopharmaceutical processing was undertaken. This enabled the students to see all key unit operations such as bioreactors, centrifuges, filtration and chromatography skids. Overall, this was a great opportunity allowing the group to see the processing environment of a leading local biotech company.
