Minimum Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate in six subjects i.e. H5 in two subjects, and O6/H7 in four other subjects. The six subjects must include Mathematics, and either English or Irish.
Vetting is conducted by the National Vetting Bureau (formerly known as the Garda Central Vetting Unit). The National Vetting Bureau (NVB) helps to assess the suitability of all applicants on this programme. It is important to note that participation in or completion of this programme may be affected by subsequent disclosure/discovery.
Info re CIT Mathematics Exam only
Some students who apply to CIT courses may not achieve the required entry standard in Mathematics through the Leaving Certificate. For such applicants, CIT offers a second chance to reach the required entry standard through a CIT Mathematics Exam. This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the CIT Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher level of performance) courses with a Higher Leaving Certificate entry standard. Students will have the opportunity to undertake a semester-long Work Placement, including the option of travelling abroad, in Year 3 (Semester 6).

The BBus Sport & Exercise Management programme combines sport, exercise and health modules with core business areas such as marketing, management, accounting and economics. Essentially, students are educated to work in the sport, leisure and business sectors of the economy, and this programme provides the specialist skills and competencies needed to achieve this. The comprehensive Work Placement Programme in Year 3 provides significant breadth and depth in the operational machinations of the Sport, Exercise and Health Industry, effectively establishing work-ready experiences for all students. Active participation in sport and/or physical activity is an advantage. However, applicants do not need to have exceptional ability or achievements in sport to excel in this programme.

This programme has been designed to cater for those who wish to pursue a career in the sport, exercise and health industries, both in Ireland and abroad. The delivery is based on the combination of key theories with applied research and practical skills to afford graduates appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies to work as professionals in a wide range of settings in the sport, leisure and business industry. The programme was developed in response to the demands of the expanding global Sport and Leisure Industry, who are constantly seeking ‘work-ready’ graduates with strong technical proficiencies and significant experience-bases in the growth area of ‘interdisciplinary sport, exercise and health.
The extensive Work Placement is an integral element of this programme and takes place in Year 3 (Semester 6). This significant placement experience affords students (i) the opportunity to experience the industry in greater depth, but also (ii) the time to express their skills, knowledge and proficiencies gained from the programme content in their respective workplaces.
A number of industry recognised external qualifications are incorporated into the programme. These include REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals) Ireland Qualifications in the area of Fitness Instruction and Personal Training. Coaching Ireland awards in a variety of sports are incorporated into the sports coaching modules. Qualifications in Lifesaving, Swim Teaching, ITEC Massage Therapy, and Sports Massage can also be attained. CIT, through the Sport & Exercise Management programme, is an affiliated institution with the European College of Sport Science (ECSS), which is home to the most diverse network of sport science related institutions in the world with affiliates across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Australasia and North America.
Suitably qualified graduates are eligible to apply for further studies at postgraduate level such as: Physiotherapy (MSc. @ UCC or UL) Sports Management (MSc. @ UCD), Sports Performance (MSc. @ UL), Sports Psychology (MSc. @ UL), and Teacher Education (PME Business @ UCC, UL, NUIG, MU amongst others).
What is the difference between CR032 and this programme?
CR032 is a 3-Year Level 7 programme whilst this programme (CR430: Sport & Exercise Management) is a 4-Year Level 8 programme. Further, there is a greater dedication to the applications of sports performance, the scientific aspects of sport and health, and also a greater emphasis on a work-ready graduate profile (i.e. the more substantial Work Placement Programme in Year 3). Finally, suitable qualified graduates of this Sport & Exercise Management programme have increased opportunities to apply for further postgraduate study in Ireland and abroad at Level 9/10.
Is there a direct link to PE teaching if I complete this programme?
It is important to note that there is no direct link between the BBus Honours in Sport & Exercise Management programme and PE teaching.
Is there a pathway to teaching from this course?
There are 2 primary possibilities to embark on further study in Teacher Education.
- Professional Masters of Education (PME) in Primary Teaching, which is a 2-year Level 9 Qualification, provided the applicant presents with the minimum Leaving Certificate requirement in Irish or suitable equivalent. The Department of Education and Skills recognises this PME to teach in primary schools.
- Professional Masters of Education in Business Teaching, which is accredited by the Teaching Council. This Postgraduate Teacher Education programme is offered in several universities that deliver Teacher Education programmes.
CIT has developed a website which gives full details of all modules for all courses. The website also has information on recommended textbooks, average weekly workload, assessments and exams.
This programme offers students the knowledge, skills and competencies to work at management level in sport, exercise, health and physical activity promotion. Graduates will have expertise in their chosen field by completing specific niche modules in the sport/exercise/health domain (e.g. Advanced Coaching Pedagogy, Strength and Conditioning, Performance Analysis and Management, Applied Sports Psychology, and Clinical Exercise).
In addition, graduates who successfully complete this Level 8 course of study will have increased opportunities to apply for progression to Level 9/10 programmes in the sport/exercise/ health domain,
