Course Summary

This Professional Diploma in Education – Home Economics- is aimed specifically at registered post-primary school teachers who have a passion for Home Economics and wish to be formally qualified to teach Home Economics to the highest level at post-primary level.

Admission Requirements:

 

Applicants must hold a Level 8 qualification (NFQ or equivalent), be registered with the Teaching Council of Ireland and have written support from their proposing school.  Interviews will be conducted in early June.

Timing Details

2 years/4 semesters. Year 1 every Wednesday 9am – 6pm + 2 hours online (every 2nd week in Semester 1 and every week in Semester 2). Year 2 every Wednesday 9am – 6pm + 2 hours online every week.


The Professional Diploma is aimed specifically at registered post-primary school teachers who have a passion for Home Economics and wish to be formally qualified to teach Home Economics to the highest level at post primary level.   This is a Level 8 programme on the National Framework of Qualification (NFQ) and is accredited by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI). It is designed in line with the Teaching Council’s curricular subject registration requirements.

 

The 65 ECTs programme is taught over 2 years and is delivered both online and on the Bishopstown Cork Campus.  Over the duration of the two years, students will study modules encompassing the core areas of:

  • Home Economics Studies & Pedagogy
  • Food Health & Culinary Skills
  • Responsible Family Living
  • Textiles & Craft 

In both Years 1 and 2, students will complete 3 modules in each semester

 

 

The programme will operate one day per week on campus and will have a maximum two hours online content delivered over each semester as follows:

  • Year 1 Semester 1
    Campus: Every Wednesday 9am to 6pm
    Online: 2 hours every 2nd week
     
  • Year 1 Semester 2
    Campus: Every Wednesday 9am to 6pm
    Online: 2 hours every week
     
  • Year 2 Semester 1
    Campus: Every Wednesday 9am to 6pm
    Online: 1 - 2 hours every week
     
  • Year 2 Semester 2
    Campus: Every Wednesday 9am to 6pm
    Online: 2 hours every week

Course Fees:

  • €6,500 per student
  • €350-€400 fee for necessary uniforms, lab-coats and knives
