At present, students generally spend four months in appropriate work placement in third year. The placement can be organised for Ireland or abroad.

Suitably qualified graduates of the BSc in food and Health Science may apply for entry to Year 4 of CIT’s Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nutrition and Health Science.
CAO Code CR 006 Applied Biosciences
If you wish to graduate with a BSc in Food and Health Science you need to apply through the CAO using the CAO Code CR 006 Applied Bioscience.
Years 1 and 2 are common. At the beginning of Year 3, students choose their preferred qualification (BSc in Food and Health Science OR BSc in Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology).
Additionally, on completion of the BSc in Food and Health Science and subject to certain conditions you may apply for entry to Year 4 of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Nutrition and Health Science.
*Please note: Students who successfully complete Year 2 of this programme and do not wish to progress to Year 3 will receive the Higher Certificate in Applied Biosciences.
This course provides students with a broad scientific education. The basic concepts of the biological sciences, biochemistry, cell biology, immunology, microbiology and molecular biology are emphasised. Knowledge of environmental science, analytical techniques, quality management and bioprocessing are seen as key requirements and these disciplines are studied in detail. Laboratory work forms a substantial part of the course and classes are held in modern well-equipped laboratories. The development of high-level laboratory skills and the ability to use them in the service of advanced industrial biology are key aims of the course.
Considerable emphasis is placed on the development of self-reliance, project skills, teamwork and quality in all areas of operation. Successful students, having mastered the specific knowledge and skills of the individual subject areas, are in great demand from multinational pharmaceutical companies, as well as the traditional employers in the food and drink sectors.
Years 1 & 2 (Common)
The course is taught through formal lectures and extensive laboratory work. The high emphasis on practical laboratory work differentiates programmes at Cork Institute of Technology from those at University.
Opportunities currently exist for a number of students on courses to participate in EU funded exchange programmes involving colleges and enterprises in France, UK, Germany, Finland, Spain and Sweden. In addition, students from these countries join our programmes at different levels every year.
The academic year is divided into two semesters. The course is taught through formal lectures, tutorials and laboratory work, with a very strong emphasis on practical work. The structure of the course is modular and each module is examined through continuous assessment and/or examinations upon its completion.

Higher Certificate in Applied Bioscience
