Overview

If you would like to undertake and engage in an extensive range of business disciplines, with the opportunity and flexibility to choose a specialism such as business (general) or accounting or marketing, you should apply for MT 550.

 

 

Duration: an honours degree can be obtained after 4 years, with the option to leave with a level 7 degree after 3 years (depends on specialisation).

Students applying under MT 550 share a common first year, giving students the opportunity to study a wide variety of business modules before deciding which stream they wish to pursue. Having engaged with specialised electives in second year, students then select their preferred degree at the end of year 2. All programme options have a formal work placement, minimum of 15 weeks, which is an integral element of the course.

Students can choose from the following degree programmes:

 

Bachelor of Business (Level 7)

This business programme provides the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute effectively within a business and management setting and is designed to provide a solid foundation for success in a wide variety of business career options listed hereunder. On successful completion of year 3 of the level 7 Bachelor of Business degree, students have the opportunity to study for an additional 4th year and achieve the level 8 Bachelor of Business (Hons) degree.

 

Bachelor of Business in Marketing (Level 7)

The marketing programme focuses on the concepts, theory, processes and techniques of marketing necessary to function in a marketing environment, sales or customer service roles with particular emphasis on the skills required within the digital economy. On successful completion of year 2 eligible students will transfer to the Level 7, Bachelor of Business in Marketing degree and students have the opportunity to study for an additional 4th year and achieve the level 8 Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Marketing degree.

 

Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Accounting (Level 8)

The accounting programme focuses on the specialist education and training necessary to enable graduates to gain employment in an accounting/financial capacity in any business sector. On successful completion of year 2, eligible students will transfer to year 3 of the Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Accounting (Level 8) degree.

What will I study?

First year at a glance

  • Mathematics: the study of mathematics supports the study of accounting, and financial management
  • Information Technology: development of information technology (IT) skills
  • Economics: this gives students an essential understanding of the environment in which businesses operate
  • Communication Skills: assists students in the transition to third-level education; team projects, oral and written presentation skills, and develop important personal and professional skills for the business world
  • Fundamentals of management: this acts as a foundation for the subsequent study of Contemporary Management, Marketing, and Human Resource Management
  • Financial Accounting: this is the first of a number of accounting modules offered to students throughout the courses
  • It is encouraged that students take a foreign language for the benefits they will derive from it in their careers, however, this is optional

What is a Module?

A module is a standalone unit of learning and assessment and is completed within one semester. A full-time student will normally study six modules in each semester; part-time and ACCS (Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects) students will have flexibility as to the number of modules taken.

Entry Requirements

Entry 2024

For admission to a programme, standard applicants must

  • score the necessary CAO points and
  • meet the minimum entry requirements

Leaving Certificate in five subjects i.e. O6/H7 in five subjects. The five subjects must include Mathematics and either English or Irish grade O6/H7.

Further Studies

Subject to availability of places and specialisation, suitably qualified Level 7 graduates are eligible to apply for entry to year 4 (final year) of:        

  • Bachelor of Business (Honours)

or

  • Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing

The Bachelor of Business (Honours), Level 8 programme satisfies the degree requirements of the Teaching Council to teach Business Studies to Junior Cycle level and Business to Leaving Certificate level. A postgraduate programme of initial teacher education, accredited by the Teaching Council, consisting of two years full-time study or 120 ECTS credits must subsequently be completed to be eligible for registration with the Teaching Council.

Question Time

If you would enjoy exploring a broad range of business topics, with the opportunity to choose a business specialism such as business, or accounting or marketing at a later stage, you should apply for MT 550. If, however, you are confident that accounting or marketing is your preference, you should consider applying for the relevant Level 8 course (i.e. MT 943 BBus (Honours) in Marketing or MT 942 BBus (Honours) in Accounting) which specialises in that area from year 1.

Students undertaking the Bachelor of Business programme (MT550) have the option to choose to study either French, German or Spanish as an elective.

However, students who pursue French as an elective in year 1 are expected to have completed a French course at Leaving Certificate level.

Students who wish to pursue German as an elective in year 1 are expected to have completed a German course at Junior Cycle level.

Spanish is an elective offered at beginners level and no previous knowledge of Spanish is necessary.

No, the core fundamentals of accounting and business are delivered in year 1.

All programmes and pathways lead to a Level 8 Honours degree.

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Business (Honours) level 8 degree, graduates are recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland to be eligible to teach Business Studies to Junior Cycle Level and Business to Leaving Certificate level (not Accounting). This is subject to the successful completion of a Master’s in Education

On successful completion of the Bachelor of Accounting (honours) level 8 degree, graduates are recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland to be eligible to teach Business Studies to Junior Cycle Level and Accounting to Leaving Certificate level (not Business). This is subject to the successful completion of a Master’s in Education

Graduates of the Bachelor of Business in Marketing (Honours) level 8 degree are not recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland and therefore not eligible to teach.
