Course Summary
The Business Technology and Communications programme will provide students with a unique blend of technology, communication skills and general business knowledge required for work in a technology driven business environment. This is a practical, skills-focused programme, exposing students to the most up-to-date technologies which will allow graduates to work as individuals or in a collaborative team across business disciplines.
Admission Requirements:

For admission to a programme, standard applicants must
- score the necessary CAO points and
- meet the minimum entry requirements
Leaving Certificate in five subjects i.e. Grade O6 or H7 in five subjects. The five subjects must include Mathematics, and either English or Irish.
Info re MTU Mathematics Exam only:
Some students who apply to MTU courses may not achieve the required entry standard in Mathematics through the Leaving Certificate. For such applicants, MTU offers a second chance to reach the required entry standard through a MTU Mathematics Exam. This second chance facility allows applicants (depending on their results in the MTU Mathematics Examination) to gain entry to courses with an Ordinary Leaving Certificate Mathematics entry standard, and (with a higher level of performance) courses with a Higher Leaving Certificate entry standard. Work Placement
In Year 3, students undertake a minimum fifteen week work placement/internship. Students have the benefit of an academic mentor from CIT and a mentor in the workplace. Feedback from students and our industry partners has been very positive to date. In many cases, students have secured full-time employment as a result of the placement.

MT 551 Course Location: MTU Bishopstown Campus, Cork
Students of the Business Technology and Communications programme will develop an understanding of business theory and practices and attain a wide range of fundamental skills which including web design, spreadsheets, accounting, marketing, management, human resource management (HRM), management information systems, effective communication skills, teamwork, public relations, digital marketing, social media, supply chain management, and more.
Technology is embedded throughout the programme and students will significantly enhance their IT Skills including the use of MS Office applications and other collaborative technologies such as Zoom, Slack and Canva. Students’ ability to summarise information and deliver effective individual and team presentations to live audiences will be developed to a high standard.

Progression to Level 8 (Honours Degree)
Progression to Level 8 (Honours Degree) Graduates who achieve the specified level of academic performance will be eligible to apply for entry to a one-year add-on:
BBus (Honours) in Business Technology and Communications (Level 8) (Currently in development)
Honours degree holders who achieve the specified level of academic performance are eligible to apply for a postgraduate course of study at MTU, and at other third level colleges in Ireland and abroad.

Question time
What are the typical student numbers in first year?
First year course/class size is approximately 65. Computer lab groups are a maximum of 20.
How much Information Technology (IT) is involved in the course?
Over a third of the programme modules are focused on developing IT skills and working with business related software packages.
Do I need prior knowledge in computing to study on this course?
No, the fundamentals are taught in year 1 and it is assumed that students have no prior knowledge.
Is it possible to obtain a higher certificate after two years?
Yes, students who successfully complete year 2 and do not wish to progress to year 3 will receive a Higher Certificate in Business Technology and Communications.
