Admission Requirements:

Applicants should have a minimum of a Level 7 architectural technology or engineering or construction related qualification AND must have successfully completed the  CIT Certificate in Building Information Modelling Technologies Special Purpose Award (or demonstrate equivalent learning).

Equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis to candidates who have not achieved this academic standard but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience in the Built Environment discipline.

Course summary

This Certificate is a three module, 15 credit, part-time programme. The programme provides an opportunity for architectural, engineering, and construction degree graduates, or qualifying students, to acquire effective skills and knowledge in the strategic application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodologies and technologies within a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to building design and construction.


Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering

All part-time programmes at CIT will run subject to sufficient student numbers. Where a programme cannot proceed, applicants will be contacted and advised on alternative study options.

Course Fee: €1,500
(Multiple applications from the same company will be eligible for a 10% discount for 2 attendees, 15% for 3 attendees or more)



Participants will gain experience in using industry standard technology such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, Recap 360, BIM 360 Glue, and BIM 360 Field or other equivalent software. The programme is delivered by academic staff involved in BIM research combined with industry professionals charged with the delivery of BIM projects in Ireland and abroad.


Overall, this award will enhance employment prospects where there is an ever-increasing skills need both nationally and internationally. The programme will build on participants’ existing experience of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector and introduce experience in working within a collaborative environment and enabled by the latest technological advances which support industry.


This programme will also offer a natural stepping-stone in the lifelong learning journey of those who have previously completed the well-established CIT Certificate in Building Information Modelling Technologies programme, which now has over 100 graduates.


The programme comprises three mandatory modules:

DESI8018 Design Thinking for BIM

Through interaction with the CIT Careers Service, the learner will be provided with the tools to engage in effective Career Planning and Management. Careers education will be facilitated through tailored employability workshops, one-to-one support, relevant career resources and, networking opportunities with employers and recruitment agencies, thus leading to increased job readiness.



Special Purpose Award –Certificate in Strategic Building Information Modelling Management (Level 8 (15 ECTS Credits) on the National Framework of Qualifications).



INTR8028 BIM - Theory and Practice





Building Information Modelling (BIM) is revolutionising the way in which projects within the built environment are conceived, designed, constructed, operated and decommissioned. This module will provide the learner with an overview of the important themes in the growing field of BIM. The learner will study how new and emerging processes and technologies enable industry professionals to achieve more effective and sustainable buildings and infrastructure. The learner will also be introduced to Lean and examine how it might compliment BIM within the AEC sector.


INTR8030 Virtual Design & Construction



Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) is the management of integrated multidisciplinary performance models of built environment projects, thereby enabling the development and testing of a digital prototype in advance of the commencement of construction on site. Learners will use digital technologies and industry best practice processes to facilitate data capture and management of multi-disciplinary performance models within a Common Data Environment (CDE).


DESI8018 Design Thinking for BIM



This module aims to provide the learner with the necessary knowledge and skills to apply a design thinking methodology within a Building Information Modelling (BIM) context. Learners will develop skills in identifying and observing barriers to the effective and efficient use of human resources, processes and technologies in practice. In response to identified problems, learners will adopt a design thinking methodology to develop creative solutions
