The strength of Science and Engineering has been maintained at 64% of total full-time enrolments. The Institute maintains this balance because of its close links with the relevant industry sectors and a growing reputation for quality research and technology transfer activities. Key areas of strength include Chemical and Process Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications, Electronics Manufacturing, Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, Biosciences, Applied Physics and Instrumentation, Biomedical Sciences, Computer Applications, and Business Studies.

International educational exchange programmes enhance the quality and scope of third-level education. Spending a period of study or work placement overseas, or meeting and working with visiting students and staff, provides CIT students with new insights into different educational systems, as well as other cultures.
The EU-Funded Socrates/Erasmus Student Exchange Programme provides the opportunity for CIT students to spend a period of structured and fully-recognised study at partner institutions in countries such as France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Greece, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Czech Republic and Romania. Each year, CIT welcomes over 100 incoming students on various exchange programmes. Their presence in the Institute is highly valued, and an International Students' Society, funded by the Institute, and run by the visiting students themselves, organises a programme of cultural and social events throughout the year.
The EU's Leonardo da Vinci student placement programme, has enabled many CIT students to spend a training period abroad, availing of the opportunity to work with the latest technologies and developments in their professional sphere, in a range of organisations, from the manufacturing industry, to software companies and healthcare organisations. These placements will continue to be funded under the new EU Integrated Lifelong Learning Programme, so that many more students can avail of the opportunity of international work experience.
New co-operation arrangements are being explored with countries outside of the EU, such as Canada and the US. CIT is a participant in the George J Mitchell Peace Scholarship scheme, which provides the opportunity for study exchanges with the Maine Community College System in the USA.
In addition to mobility programmes, CIT co-ordinates and participates in a broad range of trans-national pilot projects.
