Irving Oil's Donal McSweeney presents to second year students

Thanks to Donal McSweeney (class of 1989) from Irving Oil who presented to the Second Year chemical engineering class on Irving Oil’s new propane / butane splitter. Donal is Irving Whitegate’s Project Definition Engineer and he showed how the classic McCabe-Thiele approach can help in visualising distillation operations and in validating computer simulations. The tower is just about to go into operation and he was able to show images of it in fabrication and installation. Column hydraulics are important, and Leanne O’Reilly (class of 2017) explained how she had inspected the tower internals to ensure proper installation. Leanne is the Gasoline Unit Engineer and she will be responsible for operating the new column. Donal’s superb presentation demonstrated how theory is applied in practice and linked the academic to professional concerns.
