Admission Requirements:

Applicants should have a minimum of a Level 7 architectural technology or engineering or construction related qualification.


Equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning (www.cit.ie/rpl) process on an individual case-by-case basis to candidates who have not achieved this academic standard but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience in the Built Environment discipline.

Course summary

This Certificate is a four module, 30 credit, part-time programme. The programme provides an opportunity for architectural, engineering, and construction degree graduates, or qualifying students, to acquire effective skills and knowledge in the strategic application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) methodologies and technologies within a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to building design and construction.

Overview

Participants will gain experience in using industry standard technology such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, Recap 360, BIM 360 Glue, and BIM 360 Field or other equivalent software. The programme is delivered by academic staff involved in BIM research combined with industry professionals charged with the delivery of BIM projects in Ireland and abroad.

 

Overall, this award will enhance employment prospects where there is an ever-increasing skills need both nationally and internationally. The programme will build on participants’ existing experience of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector and introduce experience in working within a collaborative environment and enabled by the latest technological advances which support industry.

 

This programme will also offer a natural stepping-stone in the lifelong learning journey of those who have previously completed the well-established MTU Cork Certificate in Building Information Modelling Technologies programme, which now has over 100 graduates.

 

Through interaction with the MTU Cork Careers Service, the learner will be provided with the tools to engage in effective Career Planning and Management. Careers education will be facilitated through tailored employability workshops, one-to-one support, relevant career resources and, networking opportunities with employers and recruitment agencies, thus leading to increased job readiness.

INTR8031 Project BIM+M

Development of the build environment continues to be executed within an increasingly complex context. Effective communication and collaboration between the increasing variety of specialist professions across the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector is crucial to successful development of a universally designed, sustainable and resilient built environment. Building Information Modelling (BIM) represents a panacea to the problematic silo-based traditional approach to AEC projects. It is widely accepted that BIM comprises three primary pillars, namely, people, process and technology. This module will adopt a project-based learning approach in facilitating learners in the exploration of the contribution of such pillars in supporting collaborative and effective realisation of AEC projects. Learners will collaboratively undertake a multi-disciplinary AEC project where research and learning are shared within the safe confines of a cooperative learning environment, free of the risks of financial, legal, or professional risks inherent of industry. Learners will be supported in such collaborative activity by developing intrapersonal skills (e.g. reflection), interpersonal skills (e.g. communication, team work), and leveraging the latest digital technologies in accordance with industry best practice processes.

 

INTR8034 Project - Research Phase

Beginning with an approved outline brief, typically a project title and outline objectives, the learner develops the knowledge, know-how and skills, and competences required to successfully research, develop, scope the project and present an implementation plan. This module requires the learner either individually or as part of a team to develop research, problem analysis and project planning skills. The learner is expected to be self motivated whilst under direction of a project supervisor and to communicate the process and outcomes of their work in a style and manner appropriate for professional practitioners in their discipline.

 

CIVL8031 AEC Project & Constract Management

This module will evaluate the role and responsibilities of the AEC project manager within a construction project.

 

INTR8035 Project - Implementation Phase

This module develops within the learner the knowledge, know-how and skills, and competences required to successfully complete a project in accordance with an approved plan. The module requires the learner either individually or as part of a team to develop, implement and critically assess a detailed methodology to address a defined problem within a prescribed time-frame. The learner is expected to be self motivated whilst working under direction of a project supervisor and to communicate the process and outcomes of their work in a style and manner appropriate for professional practitioners in the discipline.
