Cork City Council, Cork Education and Training Board, University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology sign Memorandum of Understanding on Learning

Cork City Council, Cork Education and Training Board, University College Cork and Cork Institute of Technology recognise the necessity to continually improve skills and human capital through learning.

The four organisations have joined with others to form a Steering Group to advance the following aspirations: Learning for all; Promoting Inclusion; Prosperity and Sustainability.

The Lord Mayor said:

“This initiative builds on Cork City Council’s formal adoption of the UNESCO Beijing Declaration on Building Learning Cities in 2014.”

A formal Memorandum of Understanding is being put in place in order to address the following themes:

 Benefit the citizens of Cork by achieving designation as a UNESCO Learning City;
Enhance existing projects, including the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival;

III. Encourage citizens to engage in learning activities, whatever their age, interest or ability, in order to develop a culture of learning.

Ted Owens, Chief Executive of Cork ETB said:

“This is a historic day for Cork, the dawn of a new era for learning.  It is the first time the 3 key educational bodies formally sign a commitment to join with Cork City Council in this vital work for our city.  It builds on the good work done over many years by committed people both within our organisations and throughout the city”.

The Memorandum was signed on Friday June 12th 2015 by Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Mary Shields; Ted Owens, Chief Executive, Cork Education and Training Board; Dr Michael Murphy, President, University College, Cork; and Dr Brendan J. Murphy, President, Cork Institute of Technology.
