Education means more than just academic learning. It's about interacting and socialising with other students which in turn relieves the pressures of being buried beneath a pile of economics, chemistry or mechanics books! Some of the greatest memories students have of their time in College are from getting involved in Societies and attending Society events. The diversity of CIT Societies means that practically every taste is catered for. College is a time of learning so you shouldn't confine yourself to activities you already know. Broaden your horizons by taking up a Society that the Institute has to offer.

CIT Societies range from large course related Societies like Mechanical Engineering and Business & Accounting which are run primarily for students within a particular course and provide a great chance to get to know your class on a social level - to college wide Societies like Film, Music and Yoga. During the academic year 2008/2009, we had 42 Societies in operation between the four campuses, Bishopstown, CIT Crawford College of Art and Design, CIT Cork School of Music and NMCI. The activities carried out by the Societies can range from the organisation of Table-Quizzes, to Workshops, Showing Films, trips to various parts of Ireland, Go-Karting or even the very popular "Faculty Balls". College can be a stressful experience especially for 1st years and Societies can play an important part in helping you to overcome this.

Juggling Society on Societies Day

Societies Day

The first real opportunity to check out the societies in CIT is on Societies Day which is held in late September. The purpose of the day is to encourage participation in Societies and to raise awareness of the huge variety of Societies. If a particular Society appeals to you put your name down and head along to their first meeting. If you have taken the time to study all of the Societies that CIT has to offer and believe that your interest is not catered for then why not try and set up that Society. It isn't as difficult as it may seem! Call to the Societies Office to discuss it.

Society Balls

Over the academic year a number of Societies balls take place. They are the highlight of the year for many students and a great time is always had. Save some of your money during Christmas as the Society balls start in February!

Society Awards

Over the last number of years CIT has initiated an awards ceremony to highlight societies and individual members who have made an outstanding contribution to extra-curricular life at the Institute. The awards are presented by a known celebrity. Over the years, we have had the privilege of inviting guests such as Niall Toibín, Alan Shortt, Billa O'Connell, Des Bishop, Ryan Tubridy, Joe Rooney and Martin King.

Society Profile

International Students' Society Ezgi Muderrisoglu (Turkey) and Sandra May (Germany), International Students' Society. French, Spanish, German, Polish, Finnish, Czech, Canadian, Italian, Irish and more - that's a lively, loud, and colourful crew. This is a very sociable Society which won the National Student Society of Ireland in 2006 and 2008. The aim of this Society is to bring International students together to experience the best of Ireland and to become familiar with the Irish culture, history and geography. It gives students of different nationalities the opportunity to meet each other and socialise with Irish students. With many organised events each year, ISS is a very sociable group of more than 150 members; who get together for parties, sporting activities and twice yearly for a weekend trip. Over the years they have organised weekend trips to Belfast and Galway and various nights and events out including Welcome, Halloween & Christmas Parties, bowling, pool tournaments and paintball. The Society also participates in the annual St Patrick's Day Parade. The future objective is to expand ISS in and beyond CIT.

Sport & Societies Day

In early September, a very lively and vibrant Sports and Societies Day gave Freshers their first opportunity to jump on the rollercoaster of college life. Thousands of students from all years poured into the Student Centre from early morning to be greeted by an array of colourful exhibitions and stalls.

Capoeira performers

Bryan O'Sullivan and Darren Shorten, DJ Society and Radio Society.

Gamers and Jugglers amazed the crowd with their dazzling demonstrations, showing all that practice really does makes perfect. Rockclimbing club members breathtakingly abseiled from the rafters of the student centre building, surf club members entertained all with their wobble board mimicking the balance needed for surfing that perfect wave! Muscular strength was tested by the Boxing Club in a 1 minute Press-Up Challenge. While some high kicks, excellent skill and demonstrations were performed by both the Karate and Tae Kwon Do Clubs. Amongst the stalls, the students were sampling fair trade chocolate spread on toast and hitting the highest scores on the latest gaming technology.

Credit must go to all clubs for making such a great effort in displaying colourful and informative stands. There was a great buzz and sense of anticipation throughout the day.

Darren Donohoe, Kate Curran and Jamie O'Donoghue, Traditional Music Society.

Adrenaline fuelled, out of control riffs, oceans of flicking hair, and bopping heads...all on show at the events organised by the Music Society. Audiences can be found listening to the diverse choice in styles of live music from bands such as Flatline,Kallus, Racing for Pinks, Rest, Ten past Seven, Houl'inBoi, Black Orange and many more, who dished up a great blend of soul food for a well deserving audience throughout Cork City. Instrument lessons in drums and guitar are held on a weekly basis. The annual 'Battle of the Bands' is also held annually. Next year the Society aims for repeated success in the live area, providing the CIT bands a chance to show their flare and with some new ideas for the coming year.
