After completing a Degree in Structural Engineering, John Sheehy, received a scholarship from Cork Institute of Technology to work as a Student Enterprise Intern in the Innovation and Enterprise office while completing a Master’s in Business Studies. John credits the years as an intern as hugely formative in terms of mind-set towards work saying “I feel that I was telling students that they could be their own boss, it finally sunk in with me and I started to take risks.”
As semi-finalist in The Voice of Ireland 2015 he has performed live to audiences of over one million viewers. This experience afforded John the opportunity to change career as he signed with an agent in the UK who has provided guidance ever since. John enrolled in a school of Performing arts where he trained for a year, before moving to London for auditions.
After hearing many ‘No’s’ John finally got his big break being cast in a new concept musical “The Choir of Man” which has grown in to an award winning show touring in three continents. Debuting at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, the show were invited to the Adelaide Fringe Festival winning the overall “Pick of The Fringe” Award out of 1,200 shows. In the same year John toured China and India with another acapella group “The Magnets”.
The Choir of Man was taken on board Norwegian Cruise Lines “Escape” where it was the highest rated show across the entire fleet out of shows like ‘Kinky Boots’, ‘Rock of Ages’, Priscilla’ and ‘After Midnight’.
With the first leg of a 32 state North American tour completed the group have their sights set on a residence on Broadway or Vegas.” John is enjoying every minute of the journey saying “It’s been incredible to be part of a developing show, the tour has been amazing with the opportunity to see so much of the states whilst performing in some iconic theatres.”
An extract from The Broadway World Review recognised our Cork native’s talents on stage, writing, “One of the memorable moments of this show is when the cast pantomimes watching a sports event and there's a spotlight upstage center on John Sheehy singing Adele's Hello. This moment was comical to the audience at first but as his beautiful tenor vocals danced all over the place, we became putty in his hands.”
