Traineeships

Application Procedure

An Erasmus traineeship (work placement) can be carried out at either of the following types of organisation:

  1. A company or professional or research organisation
  2. An Erasmus partner institution (e.g. in a campus company of the university, or working in one of its administrative centres.)

Please note the different application procedures for options 1 & 2.

1.    Traineeship in a Company
Some academic departments have contacts in companies abroad, but on the whole, it is the responsibility of the student to find the traineeship.  If a student finds his/her own placement the training content of the placement will need to be approved by their placement coordinator regarding suitability and relevance to the student’s course.

Following approval of the placement, the student should do the following:

  • Download and complete the Erasmus traineeship application form and attach a current CV to it, and submit it to the MTU Erasmus Office.
  • The student will then be asked to meet the MTU Erasmus Officer, Margaret Mulderrig, to discuss practical issues such as the Erasmus grant, contract, and completion of an Erasmus Learning Traineeship Agreement. This document will be sent to the host organisation for approval and signature, before the traineeship period commences.
  • Once an application for an Erasmus Traineeship has been approved, the student will be required to sign a traineeship contract, which sets out the terms and conditions of the Erasmus placement, start and finish dates for the traineeship, and the Erasmus funding to be paid to the student.
  • An Erasmus Traineeship Report must be submitted on-line at the end of the traineeship period.
  • The student will be required to sign a receipt form for each grant payment.

2.    Traineeship in an Erasmus Partner Institution

Students can carry out a traineeship working in a laboratory/administrative/services area at one of MTU’s European partner institutions. These traineeships are normally arranged by the placement coordinator in each academic department. The application procedure is similar to that for company traineeships but there are some additional steps and stricter application deadlines. Students applying for a traineeship which is due to take place in March or April will need to be aware that the deadlines of the receiving universities are usually in October or November of the preceding year. This is because institutions need to know how many students will require accommodation during the spring semester, whether they will arrive in January or in April.  Many institutions have an automatic cut-off date, after which it is too late to submit an application.

The following procedure should be followed for traineeships at partner universities:

  • Download and complete the Erasmus traineeship application form (see link below) and attach a current CV to it, and submit it to Margaret Mulderrig, MTU Erasmus Office, Bishopstown Campus.
  • The student will then be asked to meet the MTU Erasmus Officer, Margaret Mulderrig, to discuss practical issues such as the Erasmus grant, contract, and completion of an Erasmus Learning Traineeship Agreement.
  • The student will then be required to complete the application form for the partner university, and informed of the supporting documents they will need to include in their application. Some universities have on-line application systems.
  • The traineeship agreement is sent to the host university as part of the application package, and must be signed and returned to MTU before the placement can take place.
  • Once an application for an Erasmus traineeship has been approved, the student will be required to sign a traineeship contract, which sets out the terms and conditions of the Erasmus placement, start and finish dates for the traineeship and the Erasmus funding to be paid to the student.
  • An Erasmus Traineeship Report must be submitted on-line at the end of the traineeship period.
  • The student will be required to sign a receipt form for each grant payment.
