Official Opening of the Crawford Municipal Technical Institute

Tuesday 16th January 1912 at 3.30 p.m.

The opening ceremony took place in the Examination Hall at the Institute and the  following was the order of events.

 

  1. The Lord Mayor, Ald. James Simcox, called on Mr. F.B. Giltinan, Secretary of the Institute to read the correspondence.
  2. Mr. Giltinan read the correspondence which consisted of letters of apology for their inability to attend from eleven persons, including three bishops, other dignitaries and from Mrs. Ida Sharman Crawford who was indisposed.
  3. Mr. A.F. Sharman Crawford, Vice-Chairman of the Technical Instruction Committee, thanked the Lord Mayor for his attendance and invited Mr. Arthur Hill, Architect, to present him with a gold key.
  4. Mr. Hill presented the Lord Mayor with the gold key and spoke briefly.
  5. The Lord Mayor, Ald. Simcox, accepted the key and addressed the meeting.  He concluded by formally declaring ‘The Technical School of the City of Cork’ open to the public.
  6. Mr. T.W Russell M.P. Vice- President of the Department of Technical and Agricultural Instruction, Ireland, then rose to speak and addressed the meeting.
  7. Mr. Sharman Crawford, Vice-Chairman of the Technical Instruction Committee, then spoke and proposed a vote of thanks to Mr. Russell.
  8. The Hon. Recorder of Cork, Mr. Bourke, spoke and seconded the vote of thanks to Mr. Russell.
  9. The Lord Mayor put the vote of thanks which was passed with acclamation.
  10. Mr. T. W. Russell replied to the vote of thanks.
  11. The City High Sherriff, Ald. Beamish, was next to speak and proposed a vote of thanks to the Lord Mayor.
  12. Mr. Maurice Healy M.P. seconded the vote of thanks and spoke in support of it.
  13. The vote of thanks to the Lord Mayor was passed with acclamation.
  14. The Lord Mayor replied to the vote of thanks.
  15. The proceedings ended and the visitors were shown through the laboratories and classrooms.
  16. In the evening, from eight o’ clock to half past ten, a Conversazione was held to which the public were invited.
