On the 14th November 2013, the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) held its annual awards celebrating the best in design on the island of Ireland. The awards cover all design disciplines and the night in Vicar Street, Dublin was attended by the who's who of the design world.

Cork and CIT’s newest educational space, the Architecture Factory  came, quite unexpectedly, from behind projects by the EU and Google to win the top award categories in Education, Commercial Interiors and Sustainable Reuse. But the biggest shock was still to come... of the 21 categories of design from fashion to web design....CIT’s Architecture Factory was crowned with the Grand Prix for best Contribution to Design in Ireland in 2013.

The IDI noted that the design ticked all the boxes, being a genuinely unique approach, innovative, far reaching and achieved within a modest budget, reiterating that good design means good business.

For CIT’s Department of Architecture who occupy the Architecture Factory, it represents a Design Double after CIT Graduates Ashlynn Walsh and Aleksandra Stanczyk won two awards in the Graduate Design awards last week, making CIT the place to be for Design Education.

They also thanked the contribution of all the design parties, including RKD Architects and ARUP as well as the vision of CIT to press for a visionary pedagogical approach to learning. Marc quipped that he was delighted to be taking something away from Dublin for Cork!
