CIT Scoops Top Prizes At International Medical Engineering Finals in London

CIT’s Shane Fogarty and Shona Cunningham have been awarded a First and a Second place respectively at the International Medical Engineering Finals in Westminster, London.

The finals took place on Thursday, 27th February 2014 in the historic One Birdcage Walk Westminster HQ of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Founding members include George Stephenson and Cork's James Edward McConnell - born in Fermoy in 1815).
In the JRI Prize for Best Undergraduate Medical Engineering Project Exhibition and Poster Presentation, Shane, a First Class Honours Mechanical Engineering graduate, took first place. Shane’s project was “Medication Capsule Thermoforming Process Improvement and Electrostatic Analysis”.
Shane returns to a highly-sought after graduate placement in the professional development programme at biomedical company, Abbott Vascular, in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary.

In the Medimaton Prize for Best PhD Medical Engineering Project Exhibition and Poster Presentation, Dr Shona Cunningham, former PhD student at CIT, took second place for “Carbon Dioxide Absorption and Channelling in Closed Circuit Rebreather Scrubbers”. Shona now takes up a post-doctorate research position in the area of Computational Fluid Dynamics at the world renowned National Physics Laboratory (NPL) in London.
Congratulations are also due to supervisors, Dr Lorraine Howard, Dr Ger Kelly and Dr Aoife Burke.
