CIT Special Entrance Examinations in Mathematics 2010
CIT holds special Mathematics examinations for applicants who have expressed an interest in its Level 8 (Honours) Engineering Degree programmes that require certain minimum levels of performance in Mathematics. The purpose of these examinations is to provide such applicants with a “second chance” opportunity to achieve these minimum Mathematics entry requirements.
How it Works
A minimum C3 grade in Higher Level Leaving Certificate Mathematics is required for entry to any of the following CIT Honours Degree (Level 8) courses in Engineering:
CR105 Chemical & Biopharmaceutical Eng (Hons)
CR108 Mechanical Engineering (Hons)
CR109 Structural Engineering (Hons)
CR520 Biomedical Engineering (Hons)
Alternatively, this Higher Level C3 Mathematics requirement may also be fulfilled by:
• achieving both a C3 in Higher Level Leaving Certificate Applied Mathematics and a D2 grade in Higher Level Leaving Certificate Mathematics
OR
• achieving a specified grade in either of CIT’s Special Entrance Examinations in Mathematics (June, August)
A minimum D3 grade in Higher Level Leaving Certificate Mathematics or a minimum A2 grade in Leaving Certificate Ordinary Level Mathematics is required for entry to the Common Engineering Honours Entry Scheme:
CR500 Engineering Common Entry Level 8
Alternatively, the requirement for D3 in Higher Level Mathematics or A2 in Ordinary Level Mathematics may also be fulfilled by:
• achieving a specified grade in either of CIT’s Special Entrance Examinations in Mathematics (June, August)
Dates of Examinations for Admission September 2010
Two special Mathematics examinations will be held in 2010; a student may sit one or both. These examinations are:
• The June Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics (JSEEM) was held on the 26th June 2010 – this examination was closely modelled on the Higher Level Leaving Certificate Mathematics examination papers and is marked in accordance with the usual Leaving Certificate procedures.
• The August Special Entrance Examination in Mathematics (ASEEM) – this examination reflects the actual requirements of CIT Engineering programmes. It is marked according to CIT Department of Mathematics procedures and criteria.
ASEEM – Tuesday 24th August 2010, morning and afternoon
Important Information
These examinations are specifically for applicants who have applied through CAO for courses in CIT.
Neither of these examinations interferes with your application for any other course in the CAO system.
The main purpose of JSEEM and ASEEM is to provide such applicants with a “second chance” opportunity to reach a qualifying standard in Mathematics for CIT Honours BEng courses.
CAO points are not awarded for either examination.
Attaining a qualifying standard in JSEEM or ASEEM does not in itself guarantee a place on any course in CIT. The cut-off points for all courses will still apply.
JSEEM will be discontinued from the academic year 2010-2011 onwards but ASEEM will continue to be offered.
