Mairéad Hickey wins 1st place in the 19th Jeunesses International Violin Competition

Mairéad Hickey, 16, a violin student of Adrian Petcu at the CIT Cork School of Music since 2003, won first place in the 19th Jeunesses International Violin Competition, Bucharest, Romania, on Thursday 17 May 2012. 

138 competitors representing 38 countries entered the competition, which is divided into three age categories. In the 14-18 category, in which Mairéad took part, there were 32 competitors from China, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Turkey and the Ukraine.

Mairéad played music by Bach and Paganini in the first round of the competition and music by Sarasate, Massenet and Tchaikovsky in the Final.  The 5 jury members came from China, France, Germany, Ireland, and Romania.  Mairéad performed Sarasate’s Gypsy Airs in the Gala Final Concert in Bucharest’s Odéon Theatre on Saturday 19 May, 2012.

This is a remarkable success at international level; hearty congratulations to Mairéad and to Adrian Petcu on nurturing such an amazing talent.
