 Team Ireland Wins Gold at WorldSkills Competition

42nd Worldskills Competition results
 


The 42nd WorldSkills Competition came to a thrilling end at the Liepziger Messe Arena in Leipzig Germany on the 7th July 2013.

The Albert Vidal Award is presented to the Competitor who earned the highest score overall. For the first time in history there was a tie. Recipients were Shinpei Utsunomiya of Japan and Hyun Woom Won of Korea. Korea led the medal count at WorldSkills Leipzig, winning 23 medals. Fifty-two Best of Nation medallions were awarded to the top Competitor in each country or region. Prior to handing the WorldSkills flag to São Paulo organisers for the 43rd WorldSkills Competition in 2015, Simon Bartley, President of WorldSkills International was overwhelmed by the WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 Competition team and supporters. "You have done a brilliant job and deserve every congratulations."

Congratulations to the Irish Team which finished 11th place overall

Irish competitors won Gold Medals in Plumbing & Heating, and Aircraft Maintenance; a Bronze Medal in Plastering & Drywall Construction; and also won 7 Medallions for Excellence  in  Electrical Installations, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Welding, Automobile Technology, Bricklaying, Restaurant Services, and Beauty Therapy.

The week-long celebration and showcase of skills brought together over 1,000 professionals in skilled trades and technologies from 52 member countries/regions. Team Ireland had 14 competitors competing in Plumbing & Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Construction Metal Work, Welding, Electrical Installations, Industrial Control, Plastering & Drywall Construction, Automobile Technology, Plastic Die Engineering, Bricklaying, Cabinet Making, Restaurant Services, and Beauty Therapy. Hearty congratulations to all the CIT students who took part in this world stage event.
 

Special congratulations to Ciarán Coady who won a Gold Medal in Plumbing & Heating.  Ciarán completed his 13 week Special Training Programme in CIT under the direction of Pat O’Riordan, CIT Centre of Craft Studies.

 

Congratulations also to Michael Barry (pictured above with Joe Clarke) who achieved a Bronze Medal in Plastering & Drywall Construction. Michael completed his Phase 4 and Phase 6 studies at CIT.


Gerard Galligan - Electrical  Installations - under the direction of Michael Hourighan, Centre of Craft Studies,  Gerard was awarded a Medallion  for Excellence

Pádraic Fennessy - Refrigeration & Air-conditioning - under the direction of David O'Riordan, Centre of Craft Studies,  Pádraic was awarded a Medallion  for Excellence

Adrian O'Neill, Welding - under the direction of Maurice Collins DIT, Adrian was awarded a Medallion for Excellence.

John Twohig, Head, Centre of Craft Studies, thanked the lecturers and support staff in CIT who assisted with the preparation of the four CIT based members of the team.
