For Researchers

Resources for Researchers

MTU provides a number of supports to assist the university’s research community. Below are some of the key services on offer, in addition to contact details for the people who can help you with your queries/needs.

Research Professional

MTU Research is a subscriber to the Research Professional funding opportunity database which provides information on national and international funding opportunities. These funding opportunities are available through funding alerts straight to your desktop in your specific and related fields. RP provides authoritative news, analysis and commentary on research policy, research funding and research politics, focusing on government departments, funding agencies and the activity of universities themselves. RP covers everything from new innovation policies to new grant schemes.

Access to the service is available to all staff and students of the University. To access the service and to enjoy the full range of features on offer, you will need to sign up for an account. Signing up is easy to do; you just need your MTU e-mail address and a few details.

Research Professional periodically deliver online broadcast tutorials for researchers. In these sessions it demonstrates how to use *Research Professional to effectively find funding opportunities relevant to your research interests as well as help users to build a broader awareness of the funding landscape. The training is fairly broad and key parts of the session will focus on providing step-by-step guidelines on various components of the service, from creating an *RP account to building an advanced search, to finding relevant funding as well as interacting with content by means of setting up weekly funding alerts to stay informed about the changing funding landscape.

The Broadcast Demonstrations are delivered via WebEx and will require user registration prior the session (you can register on the day, but it will save you a bit of hassle if you do this pre-emptively.

Vitae

MTU Research has been an institutional member of Vitae for many years now. All staff and students with an MTU email address can gain access to a vast array of training materials. In addition to the digital materials available for download, Vitae host numerous online "Hangouts" each year, enabling Researchers to engage with experts and ask questions in an open forum. Some of these online gatherings and interactions are in the form of Twitter Chats that enable an informal way of immersing oneself in the research community who may have shared interests and questions about their career development or that of their students.

While many of the training materials offered by Vitae provide advice and guidance for Researchers with respect to their own professional development and the pursuit of careers outside of academia, the organisation also provides numerous assets for those responsible for supervising Early-stage Researchers. These additional resources are an excellent foundation for adding structure to research supervision while giving the benefit of professionally designed content and documentation.

The University also has a limited number of subscriptions to Vitae’s Research Development Planner (RDF) which is a professional development framework for planning, promoting and supporting the personal, professional and career development of researchers in higher education. It articulates the knowledge, behaviours and attributes of successful researchers and encourages them to realise their potential.

For access to the RDF Planner and any queries you may have please contact researchcork@mtu.ie

Epigeum Research Integrity Training

Research Integrity training is provided via Epigeum Impact and is available to all staff and students involved in research within the Institute. Training is provided by way of an online course offered by Epigeum; promoting the responsible conduct of research in the research community. The course includes a robust certification framework based on the key learner outcomes. The assessment is delivered using randomly selected questions to ensure learners can demonstrate knowledge across the breadth of the course before being awarded a certificate of course completion. All active researchers in the University are requested to undertake this training.

If you are interested in undergoing the training programme please contact the Research Office at Research.integritycork@mtu.ie who will be able to assist you with access to the online course.
