Monday 7th April, 2014

CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory

1. GUIDED OBSERVATION OF THE MOON
3pm – 5pm
Join CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory performance astronomer Frances McCarthy & members of the Cork Astronomy Club to spot shadows on the first quarter Moon through small telescopes from the courtyard at Blackrock Castle. No need to book.
Note – this is a weather dependent event.

2. NASA’S VIEWSPACE
3pm – 5pm
Watch NASA’s Viewspace in CIT Blackrock Observatory’s workshop MakeSpace. ViewSpace is a constantly updated exhibit that displays the beauty & power of the universe, while guiding the viewer to a deeper understanding of Astronomy. It gives visitors the chance to see the latest images, movies, animations & news from the Hubble Space Telescope & other NASA observatories.

No booking required, but please note limited capacity, seats given on a first come first served basis.
Bus 202 from city centre. Plenty of free parking riverside nearby.

ENJOY AWARD WINNING UK CHOIR
For more than 25 years, Farnham Youth Choir, director David Victor-Smith MBE, has been one of the UK’s leading upper voice choirs for 12-18 year olds. It has won many competitions in the UK & abroad. At any one time some 20 songs are performed from memory, covering many different styles & spanning several centuries of choral music. The choir regularly commissions new compositions & arrangements & has produced and participated in twelve CDs.

All welcome to the Official Opening  – an exhibition of artwork by school-goers. It’s the result of an art competition for CIT Access Linked Schools, where aspiring young artists submitted an art piece on the theme My Education, My Future. Organised by a partnership between CIT’s Access Service & CIT Arts Office. The Exhibition Centre is on the ground floor of the main building, close to the main reception.

This event is for senior cycle students from Cork City & County who are interested in finding out what life as a CIT student is really like. Experience a lecture, tour the campus, quiz students about what it’s like at CIT. Pupils also have the opportunity to speak with the Access Team about any concerns they have about admission & other aspects of CIT.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR STUDY

Find out about assistive technologies which help students become independent learners. Event aimed in particular at students with Dyslexia/DCD aged 12-18.

Mark Burleigh, Assistive Technology Officer CIT, gives a practical demonstration in the latest technologies, including software that can help when writing assignments or taking notes. Participants can try some of the novel technologies, in particular mind mapping. They will also find out about the disability supports from Laura O Rourke (Disability Support Officer) & other assistive technology equipment & software available in CIT.

Event organised by CIT Disability Support Service & Access Service. Enquire about parking when booking. As numbers limited to 14 students plus parent/guardian, booking essential.

CITY SCHOOLS SHOWCASE CREATIVE BUSINESS PITCHES

The Cork Schools Enterprise Programme is an initiative of Cork City Enterprise Board aimed at fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship & innovation in second level schools. Each year it offers students the opportunity to take part in a range of enterprise competitions including a mini-company programme, a business ideas box competition & a creative business pitch competition.

As part of the Creative Business Pitch competition 2014, second level students from all over Cork City were invited to write, design & record a two minute creative video pitch for a new business idea.

Today the finalists have their video business pitches showcased at a special screening at CIT. An overall winner will be announced & presented with a special award.
